2005: The Year of the Gadget?

BBC News have an article suggesting that this year will be memorable for mobile technology, namely 3G.

I have to admit, I feel like a Luddite in that I have no interest in 3G. How many people really need to make video calls? OK it’s great technology, but if you strip out all the marketing, I think very few people would really improve their quality of life with one of these handsets.

Streaming media? I’d rather download it and listen to it offline rather than worry about my monthly bill. Watching videos? Now you’re joking - how many pixels wide are those displays?

I don’t have anything against this phenomenon per se, but I foresee a year where ‘people’ ‘have to’ ‘all’ own a 3G handset.

Having said that, my Sony Eriksson is starting to give up. I think the manufacturers design the keypads to fail after a period of time but that’s a whole other story.
